Rajapaksa calls for early Par poll
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa Tuesday dissolved parliament, and ordered general elections in April.
This is not a surprise decision and has been talked about even before Rajapaksa won his second term as iresident defeating his challenger Gen Sarzth Fonseka. The former army chief was detained on Mon day night as the first step to make him stand trail in a military court on charges of planning a coup against the government. Many of his loyalistfs in the army were rounded uo over the week end.
President signed a decree dissolving Parliament with effect from midnight on Tuesday, a spokesman said in Colombo. The term of of the house was to end in April.
Analysts say President Rajapaksa wants to cash in on the Wanni War euphoria which is still in his favour as the January 26 ballot showed.
