US-TALIBAN
1.Writing in Jasarat on US-Taliban talks, columnist Shahnawaz Farooqui says while the US has been claiming that it is holding talks with Taliban, the latter has been rejecting the claims.  This shows the US has realised that it cannot militarily defeat Taliban and that is why Washington is begging for negotiations. For the same reason, Hamid Karzai is increasing his contacts with the Taliban. (Jasarat)

2.Al Qalam weekly in its edit says foreign armies enter Afghanistan on their own choice but their exit is only when the Afghans decide. This has also been true for Iraq. The war in Afghanistan was started by the US but will be ended by Afghan people and the result will be horrible for the US and its allies. (Al Qalam Weekly Edit, 1 June to 7 June)
INDIA
1.JuD chief Prof. Hafiz Saeed has said that the forthcoming India –Pakistan foreign ministers’ talks in New Delhi would be a futile exercise like the talks held on Siachen and at the foreign secretary level. He said India is using the talks as smoke screen to strengthen its military hold on J&K and to complete its dams on rivers that flow into Pakistan. (Nawa-i-Waqt)
2.AJK PM Sardar Atiq Ahmad Khan said that the Army leadership from India and Pakistan should be included in talks on Kashmir. War is not a solution to the Kashmir dispute. Time bound talks are essential for an early outcome. (Daily Dharti, Ummat, Khabrain)
ARMY
1.Security forces took away 9 people upon their release from the Adiala Jail. Anti-terrorism court acquitted them but they continued in the custody of security agencies. When their families filed a petition against their unlawful detention, the court once again ordered their release. The security forces also took away people who had come to welcome them. (Jasarat)
2.A retired Army man hailing from the Waziristan, Hyder Khan Masood was shot dead by unidentified persons in Karachi while he was in search of a job. (Ibrat)
3.Khabrain’s edit is on the reported US warning to Pakistan for action against the Haqqani network. It says that the US is encouraged to penetrate more within Pakistan as Pakistan remains meek after the May 2 Abbottabad operation. The daily asked the government to take a firm stand against USA. 4.Nawa-i-Waqt criticizes Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar’s statement that neither the army chief nor ISI head is indispensable and that there is a need to change the military leadership after the Abbottabad incident. Mukhtar had also said that Pakistan had no threat on its eastern border. The daily also takes the minister to task for saying that Pakistan has no threat on its eastern border. The editorial alleges that Mukhtar neither had any insight regarding national defence, nor was he paying any attention to defence requirements. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)
5.Jinnah editorial on aftermath of the Abbottabad operation sees foreign hand behind the ‘propaganda’ against COAS Gen. Kayani and ISI Chief Ahmed Shujaa Pasha. As soon as the government announced its support to both, and people took out rallies in their favour, CIA, MOSAD and RAW stopped their propaganda. Certain sections of the media are however still continuing with the campaign against Kayani and Pasha. Before this could die down, the Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar gave fresh lease to the debate by his own spin on Pasha and Kayani (Jinnah Edit)
6.Nawa-i-Waqt editorial comments on the admission by naval sources that there had been a security lapse at PNS Mehran in Karachi. It calls for a thorough and quick investigation wondering all the same whether the US was involved in a bid to sabotage Sino-Pak relations. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM

1.Law enforcement agencies have arrested Taliban commander, Qari Habib from Charsadda. (Khabrain)
2.Al-Qaeda Pakistan leader Ustad Ahmed Farooq, in his short audio message, has said that the Pakistani Mujahideen are bound to follow orders from Mullah Omer and that they considered their allegiance to him as matter of pride. He also called upon to Jihadi organizations in Pakistan for an armed struggle and promised to avenge the murder of Osama bin Laden and other leaders by attacking institutions within Pakistan. 3.Ilyas Kashmiri was involved in the assassination of Minorities Minister Shahbaz Bhatti, according to a foreign news agency report (Ummat)
4.ANP leader Zahid Khan claimed that terrorist groups have been recruiting unemployed youth in KP and the tribal areas on a salary of Rs. 40,000 per month. When youth don’t get employed, they turn into terrorists. (Ummat, Jasarat, Daily Pak, Khabrain)
5.American Federation of Scientists has claimed that Pakistani nuclear weapons were not secure and were within the reach of militants from Pakistan and South East Asia. (Jang, Daily Pak)
POLITICAL DEVELOPMENTS
1.Federal Government has set up Electronic Media Relations Wing to act as a bridge between Pakistan’s electronic media and the government. According to Minister of Information and Broadcasting Firdaus Awan, the present PID set up is geared primarily to the print media. (Ibrat)
2.PM has made some changes in the federal bureaucracy. Secretary in the Ministry for Minority Affairs, Khwaja Mohammad Siddique Akbar, has now been made the Interior Secretary in place of Maj. (Retd.) Qamaruzzaman and the Secretary for Government Affairs and affairs relating to borders, Habib Allah Khatak has now been made Chairman of the Tobacco Board in Peshawar. (Ibrat)
3.JUI-F chairman Maulana Fazlur Rahman said that he would definitely join the opposition alliance if PML-N asked him. He said in his telephonic conversation with MQM chief Altaf Hussain, they agreed upon the need for a grand opposition. We both felt that Pakistan and India used Kashmir for political purposes. 4.In Awami Awaz, Aijaz Mungi says the transfer of some Federal departments to the provincial governments is not an end in itself. He regrets that resource-rich provinces, which are necessary for the emergence of a truly free and powerful Pakistan, are not being helped to progress and instead are being portrayed as anti-national. 5.Daily Intekhab and the Jang have commented editorially on Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar’s statement that confidence building with America is possible only if drone attacks are stopped. Both edits say ‘Mukhtar’s approach is correct as well as surprising. Pakistan can surmount the hurdle but it demands a change in the leadership’s attitude. (Daily Intekhab Edit, Jang Edit)
6.Ausaf Edit (30 June) gives credit for provincial autonomy to Benazir Bhutto and PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif who had signed the Charter of Democracy providing for autonomy to the provinces. The daily asks the Centre to now focus on Balochistan and utilize money from its resources on the development of the province. (Ausaf Edit, 30 June)
BALOCHISTAN
1.Balochistan CM Nawab Muhammad Aslam Khan Raeesani said that Pakistan was a reality and that talks of separation and independence were just campaigns. He alleged that international and regional players were using criminal elements to accomplish their agendas. (Jasarat)
2.Ibrat editorial warns that unless efforts are made to address the grievances in Balochistan, a situation similar to 1971 can occur once again. The human rights commission’s report cannot be ignored, it said. (Ibrat Edit)
KHYBER PAKHTUNKHWAH (NWFP/FATA)
1.According to a report, the All Parties Political Alliance Bajaur Agency has strongly condemned the Civil Law Act bill in tribal areas. They have held it worse than the Frontier Crimes Regulation, and have warned that if this bill is not revoked, tribals will initiate a protest demonstration. (Khabrain)
SINDH
2.Spokesperson for the President’s House, Farhatullah Babbar said that it is too soon at this stage to talk about a new governor for the province. The resignation of Dr. Ishratul Abad of has not yet been received, he said. (Ibrat, Jinnah)
3.Sindh police force has undergone a large-scale reshuffle under the instructions of the CM who reviewed the law and order situation at a high level meeting. 12 DIGs have been changed. (Ibrat)

ECONOMY

1.During the Musharraf rule, a huge scam took place in compensations for land and property acquired by the government, credible sources in the civil secretariat said. Finance department and PWD engineers showed extra property attached to the actual land procured, in order to pay 4 times more compensation to the owners. In return they took bribes, causing a loss of crores to the national treasury. (Baad-e-Shimal)
2.Chairman of Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Salman Siddiqui said that the tax target of Rs 1588 billion has been achieved. He claimed that for the first time, they received Rs. 4 billion more than the target. (Jinnah)
3.Jasarat editorially took the stand that the announcement of provincial autonomy was timed wrongly and it cannot benefit people when inflation is high. (Jasarat Edit)
POK NEWS
1.In his Jasarat column, Arif Bahar comments on AJK result. He says PPP’s victory isn’t surprising since the opposition to PPP in AJK is divided. It is to be seen what shape the acrimony between PPP and PML-N takes in the coming days. (Jasarat)
2.Jammu and Kashmir Human Rights organization has rejected AJK elections, saying its transparency was unsatisfactory. (Khabrain)
3.Compensation to the families affected by the Diamer Bhasha Dam will be disbursed in three phases.  In first phase, the people of Khamber Bidar and the areas around Tasawur will be given compensation. In second phase, the Chilas area will be covered and in the third phase, Gonar Farm, Bunar Das and Goharabad areas will be covered. (Ausaf, 30 June)
