CHINA
1. Some members of the Senate Standing Committee on Planning and Development have expressed concern that China may use CPEC to increase its trade with India. Their contention is that China could use Munabao and Amritsar routes to extend its trade to India, Central Asian countries and Europe. Senators felt that China would not factor in India’s bad relations with Pakistan because it has invested in the CPEC for its own benefits and interests. China’s business with India is much more than that with Pakistan. Last year the two Asian giants have signed trade agreements worth USD 100 crore. (Nawa-i-Waqt)

Turkey and Pakistan both are suffering from terrorism; their cooperation in different sectors like trade and defence shows that Pakistan-Turkey relationships cannot be affected by influence of any country. Turkish President has said West is enhancing support to Daesh and Al-Qaeda; this is creating rift between Islamic and western nations because Daesh and Al-Qaeda are targeting Muslims and Islamic nations with financial support and weapons provided by the West. INDIA -KASHMIR/LoC
1. The Indian aggression has resulted in the martyrdom of seven Pakistani troops which is not an ordinary incident to forget. The martyrdom of seven troops is equal to the announcement of war by India and in retaliation Pakistan has taken decision to give a fitting response. Army chief General Raheel Sharif said that in response Pakistan has killed 45 Indian soldiers and this should make India to stop its aggression. India should show courage and confess its loss. India will not accept its military losses because this will create fear in the Indian society and people will start opposing the Modi government. (Jasarat Edit)

2. Witnessing the Raad-ul-Barq exercise, Prime Minister Sharif said Pakistan is ready for talks as well as for a fight. India is using heavy weapons at the LoC after 13 years. This shows India’s intentions. PM’s statement signals to India that Pakistan government, Armed Forces and the people are on the same platform on the Kashmir issue. The UNSC should make India stop its atrocities in J&K and also help in resolving Kashmir issue. The US should stop support to India. (Ausaf Edit)

The PM has decided on names of new Army Chief and Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff committee and these names are expected to be announced next week. TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. Madad Ali Sindhi’s article titled ‘…and now, Balochistan is on the hit list’ says it looks like militants are targeting Balochistan. The federal government and provincial governments should review security policies because if attacks keep taking place despite high alert in Balochistan, rest of the country cannot be said to be safe. (Awami Awaz)

SINDH/BALOCHISTAN/KP/PUNJAB
1. Saheb Khan Bhati in his article, ‘Factionalism within MQM and Musharraf’s position strong,’ says MQM leaders in Karachi, who dared not disobey Altaf at one time, hardly listen to what he says these days. They are busy calling on Musharraf in Dubai one after another. Though MQM London is almost a forgotten chapter, its office bearers are still active. Most MQM London leaders have now gone to another outfit by the name, MQM Pakistan. Musharraf has started playing a mediatory role amongst different MQM factions; this will strengthen Musharraf’s position and thereby create a substantial vote bank for him in Karachi. Musharraf might not be able to get political support in other cities as he can get in Karachi through MQM. Many questions are being asked in Karachi’s political circles regarding Musharraf’s political future as more and more writings are seen on Karachi walls in his favour. Whatever cases have been filed against him in Pakistan courts will continue. (Awami Awaz)

2. The Sindh police chief has denied any political pressure on him or the Sindh police per se. Action will be taken without any discrimination no matter if it is London, (that is MQM London) or anyone else if there is any violation of law of the land. He said that some Madrasas are indulging in negative activities. (Ibrat)

3. Sindh Assembly passed ‘Sindh Minorities Rights Commission Bill’ which seeks to ban forced conversions. Under the new law those forcing conversions is a punishable offence with sentence ranging from five years to life. Maulivis and other facilitators behind any forced conversion and marriage will get three years jail. The bill was moved by PML (N)’s Nandkumar Goklani in the standing committee. It provides for setting up of a commission for the rights of minorities. The commission will have judicial powers and will be mandated to dispose of disputes within 90 days. (Sindh Express)

4. Following the terror attack on a shrine in remote parts of Balochistan, a high alert has been sounded in Larkana division of Sindh. 63 police out-posts have been set up on the Sindh-Balochistan border areas. (Kawish)

POLITICAL SCENE
1. Sohail Sangi in his article titled ‘Are political parties serious about setting the accountability process in order?’ says: Legal experts are of the view that it is not for the courts to gather evidence in the Panama case. Hence, the SC can set up a judicial commission to do that job to collect evidence. It will not be an easy job even for the judicial commission officials to go abroad and collect evidence. A need will be felt for the FIA, NAB and other concerned officials to do this. But, since these bodies ones function under the PMO, their evidence collected abroad will always be suspect. Hence there is a strong need to empower these government agencies. The agitations and campaigns should in fact be on how to strengthen the investigative agencies. No party however seems to be ready for this because each of these parties has vested interests. This is the reason that everyone will keep demanding accountability for others but accountability will never be in practice because the system’s will is not strong enough to do it. (Kawish)

2. Allah Bux Rathod writes in his article, ‘All those feasting on MQM’: MQM seems to be heading to become another Muslim league. It can spilt into more factions like it happened with PML-N which is today PML (N), PML (Q), Awami Muslim League and PML (F). Farooq Sattar stated that the ‘MQM has become a big cake now and everybody wants to eat and feast on it. But, we will not let that happen’. Apparently, Sattar was referring to reports about Musharraf taking the charge of MQM. Establishment gets done whatever it wants. PPP was once known for its anti-establishment image but now is on the Establishment’s side. Establishment has grip over MQM. It seems, some turning point is in the pipeline. Soon, the MQM that was in the hands of few traitors (pro-India leadership of the MQM) is being cleansed now. The new leader to head MQM has been shortlisted and he will never raise slogans in front of Karachi press club against Pakistan. The current leadership of MQM Pakistan is in pitiable condition. Waseem Akhtar, the Karachi mayor was behind bars for six months and is facing 40 cases. Mirza Yaseen Baig, who was once very close to the MQM raising questions over the bail of Waseem Akhtar said that this bail could have been given either because the cases against Waseem were fabricated or Waseem bribed the judges. There could be a deal with the Establishment. Waseem Akhtar could have given in writing to the establishment that he will no longer be loyal to Altaf Hussain. Waseem Akhtar said that he is not only mayor of just MQM but also of the PPP. Khwaja Al Hassan, senior MQM leader observed that MQM Pakistan’s doors are open for Musharraf and former Sindh governor Ibad. He called on Musharraf in Dubai and invited him to head MQM Pakistan but Musharraf had called his meeting with Khwaja as accidental meeting. Khwaja Al Hassan also said that MQM can join PPP but only if it gets Sindh Chief Ministership. With regards to Ishartul Abad, there are still indications that he will continue to be in touch with Altaf. His political chemistry matches more with MQM London. Ibad might do some business abroad and stay there. However in case the establishment advises Ibad to join MQM Pakistan, he cannot say no, and will join the party. Musharraf after being the President of Pakistan is not interested in heading a regional party like MQM but is interested in serving the Mohajir community. Raza Kasuri, who is close to the establishment, supported Musharraf’s heading MQM. Amir Khan had remarked that the MQM Pakistan and Pak Sarzameen Party can merge one day. It seems Kasuri could have been behind such plans. Musharraf’s coming to head this party will bring all the factions closer. The establishment’s wrath against MQM leadership will calm down. As general elections get closer, Musharraf and Ishartul Abad might join MQM. (Sindh Express)
