1. After Afghan Taliban took control over Kunduz city, the government forces targeted trade centres and civilian localities. Afghan forces used mortars, and heavy weapons due to which fire broke out in many markets and crores worth of property was lost. In the recent past, on 22 August, Afghan forces destroyed a bridge near Kunduz city; electricity tower was targeted in Baglan by helicopters. Afghan forces were forcibly using schools as military camps and bombing hospitals. NATO’s intelligence is weak and it fails to differentiate between civilian and Taliban. INDIA -LoC/KASHMIR
1. A high level meeting was held at Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to review the worsening conditions on the Line of Control (LoC). The meeting, presided over by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was attended by Foreign Affairs Advisor Sartaj Aziz, Security Advisor Lt. General Nasir Janjua, and Special Advisor Tariq Fatemi among others. Sartaj Aziz briefed the meeting on the situation on the borders with India. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif termed the LoC tension created by India is a grave threat to peace. He asked the UN to take notice of these developments. India is using unfair means in an attempt to divert international attention away from its barbaric acts in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan Army has the capacity to retaliate fully and to safeguard every inch of our land. No one should take Pakistan’s forbearance to fear. (Daily Intekhab)
2. Due to the Indian aggressions, Pakistan is reviewing limiting its diplomatic relations with India. Post-Indian forces’ unprovoked firing at the working boundary and LoC, Pakistan conveyed to Prime Minister Modi through diplomatic channels that if India doesn’t adhere to the ceasefire, and continue with unprovoked firing then Pakistan can exercise its options for its own defence. Pakistan also warned India of cutting off or ending trade, travel and diplomatic relations. (Khabrain)
3. Amnesty International has voiced concern that border violations and ceasefire violations took place 230 times during last two months. A UN spokesperson said the world body is concerned over the developments on the LoC. He said United Nations wants both Pakistan and India to resolve all differences through mutual negotiations. He also said that Islamabad is not involved in Uri attack. (Daily Intekhab)
4. Pakistan government should stop the customary protests on India’s aggression. India has support of the US and Israel. There are possibilities of defence and economic pacts between India and Israel during the Israeli President’s eight –day visit to India. Like Israel on Palestine, India is carrying out aggression in Jammu & Kashmir. The newly elected US President supports India. Due to this, there is a threat to the regional security. But in Pakistan, the government is focusing its attention on the opposition’s activities. Hence India is taking advantage of this. Pakistan should call for Security Council meeting urgently. Pakistan should end onion and potato trade with India. Arab countries and other Islamic nations should review their ties with India. (Ausaf Edit)
5. Chaudhry Khadim Hussain writes that Modi is trying to start war with Pakistan on a lower key but if war happens it will not be a limited war. Despite being fully equipped to fight a war on a large scale war with India, Pakistan believes in peace and harmony and is only by taking defensive actions. Even the general opinion amongst the masses is to take revenge from India and to make India realize what Pakistan can do. (Daily Pak)
6. Pakistan just convened a meeting of diplomats and submitted evidence before them regarding India’s aggression. Pakistan’s restraint is the major reason that the Indian forces are getting bolder by the day. There should be pressure at the diplomatic level to control India. (Ibrat Edit)
7. National Council of Artists, Pakistan Director General Sayed Jamal Shah said that they will take back from India the Mohenjo-Daro artefact with the help of UNESCO and other organisations since it is Pakistan’s national asset. (Ausaf)

TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) Chief and former president General (Retd.) Pervez Musharraf said that there is no reason to ban JuD Chief Hafiz Saeed. (Baad-e-Shimal, Nawa-i-Waqt)
2. JuD organized a Freedom Conference at Neelum in Azad Jammu Kashmir to condemn India’s aggression at the LoC. Speakers said that the villagers living close to the border will not be running away in fear of India’s firing. People will stand with the Army to counter India’s attacks. (Nawa-i-Waqt, Daily Dharti)
3. Saheb Khan Bhati says that all tall claims stand exposed by the terror networks. These claims of security are hollow, as it is evident from recent attacks. Though the Sindh government has ordered tight security at Shrines across the province in the aftermath of Balochistan attack, people continue to feel unsafe. More dangerous times are ahead for us to witness, if the authorities do not raise effectively against these terror networks. Pakistan government will have to be strict like Donald Trump and throw all the immigrants and refugees out from Pakistan. The government will have to take strict action against those staying illegally. How long can the Afghan refugees be allowed to stay in Pakistan? How long can Pakistan keep these refugees who are no less a security risk for Pakistan? (Awami Awaz)
4. Omar Qazi shares his thoughts on ‘Shrines and Militancy’. Attacks on shrines are taking place from time to time in the country. Is it enough to set up tents for accommodating law keeping machinery officials around shrines or stop the entry of devotees till CCTVs are installed at the shrines? All this is going to only add to the inconvenience of the devotees. While reacting to the attacks, leaders go to the extent of saying that when a powerful country like the US cannot check terror and suicide attacks in Afghanistan, Pakistan cannot do much. The best and most effective way to fight these terror and suicide attacks is to fight the very mind-set that creates such bombers and terrorists. There are thousands of shrines in Pakistan and they are being visited by large numbers every day. It is not always possible to stop the devotees from visiting the shrines. Hence instead of asking the devotees not to visit, the government needs to improve its security systems and their functioning. If the government does not want to do anything effective for the security of the shrines; just because they are in Sindh or Balochistan, such a mind-set needs to be set right immediately. Religious beliefs have no fixed terror ties as it is evident from the recent attack in Balochistan. Most of the visitors who died in this attack were from Karachi. If the government keeps its discriminatory attitude, the society will remain under threat. (Sindh Express)
SINDH/BALOCHISTAN/KP/PUNJAB
1. Former Sindh Governor Ishrat-ul Ibad called on PPP supremo Asif Zardari in Dubai. He is also likely to meet former President Musharraf soon. Zardari is against Musharraf playing key role in Karachi politics. Ibad is consulting his near and dear ones on his future plans. Some clarity in his plans will come in the next 15 days. Ibad could be getting to play some central role in Pakistan’s politics. (Ibrat)
2. A high-level PPP meeting will be held in Dubai for deciding on Sindh Cabinet’s reshuffle. CM Sindh Sayed Murad Ali Shah has reached to Dubai. In the impending reshuffle, Imtiyaz Ahmad Sheikh will be given Interior Ministry while Syed Khurshid Shah’s nephew Sayed Owais Qader Shah would be made Finance Minister. (Khabrain)
3. Gulam Mohammad Kumbar says some time back, the Sindh government announced that a separate police force would be set up to protect Hindu places of worship but the plan has not taken off. Harsh punishment should be given to anyone involved in the latest terrorist attack at a Sufi Shrine in Balochistan. (Awami Awaz)
4. Two days ago there was a police crackdown on the agitating employees of the Sindh Irrigation Department. Agitating teachers and clerks were beaten up. This is police’s high-handedness. Such things continue to happen during every government’s tenure. Good governance is still a distant dream in Pakistan. Any dispute can be handled through talks rather than through police action against employees. (Sindh Express Edit)
POLITICAL SCENE
1. Former president Musharraf is firming up plans to return to active politics from his perch in Dubai these days. Musharraf had toppled the elected government in 1999, and tore the system of the day into pieces. Today he planning to emerge as the third major political force in Pakistan. The moot question in such a scenario is, are there any ethics in politics? Or does politics not distinguish between friend and foe? (Kawish Edit)
2. PTI Chief’s decision to boycott the address of Turkey President to joint parliamentary session deserved to be condemned. PTI must roll back its decision since Pakistan is going through external challenges as well, like India’s aggression on the LoC. If PTI attends the Turkish President’s address, a positive message will be sent to the international community. (Khabrain Edit)
3. PTI Chief Imran Khan’s absence at the address of Turkey President Tayyip Erdogan to the joint session of the Parliament will not affect President Erdogan but India will certainly get a chance to point fingers at Pakistan. India will get new reasons for sabotaging the CPEC. Imran Khan will be held responsible for the same and this will cost him dearly in the future elections. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)
4. The PTI is divided on attending the Joint parliamentary joint session to be addressed by Turkey President. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Shirin Mazari, Shahfaqat Mehmood, Sarwar Khan want to attend the session while Jahangir Tarin, Murad Saeed, Ali Mohammad Jan and other are against the move. 7. PTI leader Arif Alvi said that producing letter from Qatar prince in the Supreme Court is a big joke. It will make the Prime Minister very controversial. Qatar’s name has cropped up with regards to the purchase of flats in London, Dubai, Saudi and elsewhere. According to Jersey court, the Qatar government stated on May 28, 1999 that Prince Sheikh Hamad Jassim had violated Qatar laws and moved out lot of money from Qatar illegally during the period of 1972 to 1995. After some settlement Qatar prince had agreed to return part of this money but did not. (Sindh Express)
POK/G-B NEWS
1. Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Speaker Fida Nashad has expressed concern over tense situation in Denur. The situation is very sensitive; the government will have to take every step with great care and caution as students and protestors are not ready to accept government’s peace efforts. Tension started after a sect took out ‘Hussein Day’ procession without permission of the administration and organized programs in two educational institutions despite a ban. Gilgit Police arrested 24 persons including students and were searching for 16 more after slapping terrorism charges on them. The protestors blocked the Traffic on Karakoram Highway and were continuing their protest at Denur Chowk demanding the release of arrested persons; the protesters are also calling for revoking the terrorism charges. The government took help from Awami Action Committee to convince protestors to end their sit-in and restore peace but all efforts went in vain as students of the Gilgit Degree College were not ready to compromise unless their classmates were released unconditionally. Shia leaders criticized the Gilgit-Baltistan government and requested the Army leadership to mediate in the matter. Government tried to revive the defunct Parliamentary Peace Committee to address the situation, but Speaker Fida Nashad refused to chair the meeting. CM Hafizur Rahman has lambasted the opposition and protestors saying that they are working against the interest of the province by blocking Karakoram Highway at a time when peace was the key for success of the CPEC. (Daily K2, Baad-e-Shimal)
2. AJK Premier Raja Farooq Haider is not right to describe Gilgit-Baltistan as part of Kashmir. The people of Gilgit-Baltistan fought alone to get freedom from the Dogra Dynasty and to become a part of Pakistan. This happened without any help from Kashmir. Even though, the Kashmir problem is an obstacle for making Gilgit-Baltistan a fifth constitutional province of Pakistan, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan will not accept any other setup.
