CHINA
1. China has expressed concern over the attack on Chinese citizens in Karachi and asked Pakistan to take concrete steps to protect Chinese citizens who were working on various projects in Pakistan. (Jasarat)
2. Federal Minister for Defense Production, Rana Tanveer Hussain, had said that Pakistan had signed an agreement for jointly making 8 submarines with China. Of them four submarines would be made in Pakistan. (Jasarat)
IRAN
1. Pakistani authorities should talk to their Iranian counterparts to resolve the issue of trade of edibles between the two nations. (Nawa-i-Waqt Edit)
AFGHANISTAN
1. Afghan Taliban had gained hold of 22 police and Army chowkies and killed 126 government forces in Helmand province. (Ummat)
2. Afghan expert Michael E. O’Hanlon (Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence, Brookings Institute) said the future of peace process in Afghanistan was in danger after the death of Mullah Akhtar Mansour. The new Taliban leadership would change their strategy on the issue of peace process and there was not much hope that Taliban would agree for talks now. (Baad-e-Shimal)
3. Pakistan has been bogged down in Panama leaks controversy and other political issues, while Iran, India, and Afghanistan have quietly signed a pact for the construction of Chahbahar port. Ever since Pakistan announced CPEC these neighbouring countries have been hatching conspiracies to sabotage the project. India announced its participation in Chahbahar project with the intension of inflicting damages upon Pakistan and to display its enmity with China. Chief of Hizb-e-Islami Gulbadeen Hekmatyar has rightly said the Chahbahar project is a conspiracy against Afghanistan and it would be better if the government of Kabul improves it ties with Pakistan. 4. Pak-Afghan relations are at an important juncture in the wake of Mullah Mansour’s death in the American drone strike and the strict policy being adopted by Pakistan with regard to the entry of Afghan nationals into the country. Kabul government is responsible for the downtrend in Pak-Afghan ties. It is necessary that Kabul should change its attitude. (Jang Edit)

1. Pakistani singer, Salma Agha, was rewarded the Indian citizenship on the ground that she had spoken against Pakistan and said that she was Indian by blood. (Ummat)
2.PAT chief, Tahir ul Qadri, along with Indian secret agency RAW, is working on a new plan to foil the CPEC project, say sources adding that they would try to create hurdles for the CPEC by holding demonstrations. Sources said that after the arrest of Indian agent Kulbhushan, a plan was formulated to send Qadri to Pakistan and this was the reason that Qadri had visited India on the pretext of attending the Sufi conference in last week of March. According to sources, he had met with RAW agents and that the location of the meeting was RAW’s sub-organization, Institute for Defense Studies and Analyses (IDSA) and Qadri was briefed by the Institute’s Deputy Director General, Brigadier (Retd.) Rumel Dahiya. (Ausaf)
ARMY/SECURIY FORCES
1. Pakistan Navy organised the ‘Tahaffuz-e-Sahil’ drill to test security preparedness at the Karachi port and adjacent infrastructure from terrorist attacks. Special operations forces, Pakistan marines, and helicopters took part in the drill. (Roznama Dunya)
TERRORISM & EXTREMISM
1. Habibul Haq writes that on 9th May 2016 he had received a message on his cell phone from Maulana Masood Azhar. The message was the news about the martyrdom of eight Mujahideen belonging to JeM along with their names. One of them was Abdus Samad Shahid. Four months ago he had met Abdus Samad in a Dowra-e-Tarbiya in Karachi; later Samad went to Bahawalpur where he participated in training. After Bahawalpur, Samad went to Balakot where he received military training and after training, Samad was chosen for a front in Afghanistan. On 7 May 2016 Samad was martyred in drone attacks along with his other companions near the Pak-Afghan border. (Al Qalam Weekly, 27 May-2 June)
POLITICAL SCENE
1. Ausaf sees maturity in PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto, and lauded his address at a public gathering in Mirpur. (Ausaf Edit)
2. Sohail Sanghi writes: it was going to take the PM about a month to get better and get back in office; this was going to cause a lot of political and constitutional crisis. The terms of reference for the parliamentary committee on Panama leaks investigations had not been made yet; with the PM not around these terms of reference would not be given final shape for some more time. Now that Ramzan around the corner, most things would get cleared only after Eid. (Kawish)
3. Zarar Pirzada writes: there was a lot of debate across the country as to how an ailing PM could run the country especially when the reports were suggesting that he would need four – five weeks to get back. How the country could be run during these 4-5 weeks and how would he continue addressing and presiding government meetings through these 4-5 weeks. Some experts were suggesting that the PM should honourably give up his post citing health reason or else this issue could become cause for another showdown between the government and the opposition. Differences were rising even within the Sharif family and there were some whispers that during his three -hour long meeting with the Army Chief, Shahbaz Sharif made some big offer to the Army Chief. This meeting could have been held to know as to how the government would be run in the absence of the PM. The meeting might have also discussed alternate arrangement or replacement for the PM. ECONOMY/WATER
1. Sindh government has registered strong protest for very negligible development outlay for the province in the Federal budget. The small allocation shows Federal government’s bias against small provinces. Federal government should not only pay heed to these objections made by the Sindh government but also find a way to address these objections. All provinces must be treated equally when it comes to developmental works. (Awami Awaz Edit)
SINDH
1. Zarar Pirzada writes: after the attack on Chinese engineers in Karachi, a pamphlet was found from the site of crime wherein an organisation named ‘Sindhudesh Liberation Army’, a subordinate of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM), claimed responsibility for the attack. However, JSMM, has denied any involvement with the pamphlet. Some BBC reports said that JSMM leaders had said that they planned to hold political protests against the CPEC and since China would not like such protests, a pre-emptive atmosphere was being created for a crackdown on nationalist organisations. How the vehicle carrying the Chinese engineers was allowed to move without a security squad. When locals had informed the Police about having spotted something mysterious, they were reportedly told that they should take care of their lives and forget about others. The area SSP was notorious for fake encounters and now he was trying to create an atmosphere for crackdown on nationalist organisations of Sindh. (Awami Awaz – May 31)

1. Majlis-e-Wahdat-ul-Muslimeen General Secretary, Agha Ali Rizvi, said that both PM Sharif and former President Asif Ali Zardari were barbaric leaders. Both PML (N) and PPP leadership has no interest or concern about Gilgit-Baltistan and its people. Rizvi criticized the PML-N Government for being biased towards Baltistan and warned that if big projects were not completed future generation would be in great disadvantage. MWM was continuing its hunger-strike camp at Lahore Press Club for the 19th Day in protest of government policies for Gilgit-Baltistan. (Baad-e-Shimal, Nawa-i-Waqt)
2. Gilgit-Baltistan Speaker Fida Nashad said that he would complaint to PM Sharif against those putting hurdles in the development of the province. PM himself has announced the setting up of cardiac care hospital in Gilgit but no actions is being taken on this and other projects announced by the PM. Nashad also expressed concern over the cancellation of big important power projects in the province. (Daily K2)
3. Federal Petroleum Minister, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, and CM Gilgit-Baltistan, Hafizur Rahman, have agreed to establish an LPG and Air mixing plant in Gilgit and Skardu to overcome the gas crisis in the province. (Daily K2, Baad-e-Shimal)
