Bangladesh is grappling with a new militant outfit, which is an offshoot of JMB.  The groups is on an overdrive for foot soldiers and  money while vigorously carrying out its radicalisation  campaign

Sarwar-Tamim Group of Jama’atul Mujahidin Bangladesh’s (JMB) has taken a new avatar. And has become active as the Brigade Ad-Dar-e-Kutni across Bangladesh. It is Mohakhali based.
Imam Mehedi Hassan is identified as its chief. Much before the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery, he was in an overdrive to collect funds and recruits. One of his main tasks was “enthusing” youth towards hizrat (breaking off old ties to walk the path towards God).
These details tumbled out during the interrogation of three militant suspects by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) sleuths at Tangail in early September. They have been identified as Md Abdul Mannan, Md Shamsher Fakir and Johurul Kha. All of the three worked as carpenters at Bhuapur but lived in Bhuapurupazila of Tangail. And they confessed that they were members of the New JMB. “We were prepared to launch attacks around the country on Imam Mehdi’s orders.”
Interrogation reports show that the arrested three had taken a pledge to join Islamist militancy under the leadership of Imam Mehdi. The “oath taking” took place at the residence of Md Abdul Mannan in Bhuapur.
A video of the oath taking is doing rounds of the social media as part of new JMB’s campaign to attract more recruits and to radicalise the youth.
Besides the three, eight others were also seen taking the militancy oat in the video. Efforts are now to identify them and to trace them.

One more member of the group, Ismail Hossain, who also goes around as Atar Ali and Shamim has since landed in the police-net. He is one of the accused in a terrorism case registered at the Fatullah police station in Narayanganj.
The Mohakhali-based radical group primarily emerged to reform the Sarwar-Tamim faction. It has since graduated to planning its own attacks. “Primarily we know that Brigade Ad-Dar-e-Kutni is a faction of New JMB Sarwar-Tamim group and it was formed by Imam Mehedi. He was trying to reorganise the members and motivate them through this brigade,” says Lt Col Tuhin Mohammad Masud, who heads RAB -3.
