Egypt moves to regulate Fatwas
The Egyptian Govt. is proposing to bring out a new law regulating Fatwas so as to check the large number of religious edicts issued on various socio-religious issues in the recent past, reports from Cairo indicate.
The proposed legislation proposes that only Al Azhar scholars shall be allowed to issue Fatwas.
Any one else who issues Fatwas without obtaining proper authorisation, to be certified by Dar El Iftia and signed by the Mufti, shall be sentenced to 1-3 years of imprisonment.
Saudi Arabia has also issued a similar decree some time ago authorising only the Chief Mufti to issue Fatwas
